artist statement

Within the Walls looks at the way in which nature is collected and represented within the domestic space. The images employ a quiet and introspective gaze, carefully observing the measure of containment and control over nature in these environments. As the home expanded from a simple shelter to escape the elements into a farther removed, more complex and personalized space, we continuously found methods to stay connected to nature.

I explore this connection, as well as the relationship between written and visual language, by using my own imagery and found text from travel postcards. The integration of these text vignettes with the micro-vistas within my photographs allows for a deeper consideration of our relationship, both to the spaces we inhabit and the spaces for which we long.

what do you love about the MFA program at RIT?

RIT has provided me an abundance of facilities and resources, including the opportunity to study in a city rich in the history of photography. The faculty at RIT is invested and supportive of students’ growth and success both as artists and individuals. Working with them has taught me to expand the way in which to communicate ideas through my medium.

anticipated graduation date: May 2013
